Te Puke’s main claim to fame is the kiwifruit industry. Originally known as the Chinese gooseberry and found only in that country, the conditions around Te Puke proved ideal for the for the growing of what is now known as kiwifruit. Over the years much of the farmland and horticultural areas of the region have been converted to kiwifruit, creating a thriving and profitable industry. At Kiwi 360 you can visit a kiwi fruit farm and learn about the process used to grow and harvest kiwi fruit. The visitor centre also has a large selection of products made from kiwifruit, from distinctive wines and liqueurs to skin-care ranges and jams. Oh, and in case you have never tasted kiwifruit, the staff there will be delighted to offer some free samples!

Papamoa, New Zealand

Until the early 1980′s the area was mostly farmland but is now a thriving urban area helping to make Tauranga New Zealad’s fifth largest city. With extensive shopping options, Papamoa is just a short drive from central Tauranga and Mount Manganui. The beach at Papamoa is a well known fishing and surfing spot and has miles of beautiful white beaches that stretch from Mount Manganui to Kaituna River. Today it is a tranquil holiday destination that encompasses the nearby Anzac Bay, with some idyllic spots for family picnics, fishing and swimming. Just across the inlet and within paddling distance for surfers is Matakana Island, covered with pine forests and a fertile nesting ground for many species of seabirds. This location is most famously the domain of Te Kura a Maia, an impressive historic Maori par – or defensive position, where the terraces cover the headland and reach down to the clear ocean waters.
